OPERATION OF AIR COMPRESSOR

  1. OBJECTIVE

To lay down the procedure for operating of Air compressor.

  • SCOPE

This SOP is applicable in engineering for operation of air compressor (58 CFM).

  1. RESPONSIBILITY
Supervisor / Executive          : : To follow the procedure
  1. ACCOUNTABILITY

  Head Engineering                 :           System Compliance

  • PROCEDURE
    • Check following points before starting the Air compressor:
      • Check the crank case oil level on the oil level indicator. If the level is   below the minimum mark add fresh oil of the VG46/68 grade.
      • Ensure that the belt tension between the compressor and motor is correct. Too much tension will put on excessive load on the motor and compressor bearings.
      • Check that the compressor rotates freely by hand and that there are no mechanical obstructions.
      • Close the drain on the air receiver.
    • Checks during compressor operation:
      • Check whether the compressor is running smoothly and that the sound is normal.
      • Feel the compressor suction parts crank case and Air receiver to ensure that the temperature is not more than 90°C. (Do not touch delivery parts).
      • Observe for air leaks at the joints of the pipes and if there is leakage then stop the compressor and rectify the defects.
      • If the all above checks are satisfactory, continue to run the compressor and note that the pressure at which the Compressor cuts off automatically. Then let out air from the receiver and note the pressure at which the unit cuts on:

                 Cut off = 7.2 kg/cm2 (for 58 CFM)

                 Cut in = 5.0 kg/cm2

  • Do’s:
  • Clean the compressor regularly.
  • Keep the air filter clean.Use only genuine spares.
  • Maintain correct belt tension.Maintain oil level in the crank case.
  • Use only clean recommended lubricants.Drain the condensate daily by opening the drain valve.Attend the immediately to anything unusual with the compressor.
    • Don’t’s:
      • Neglect the routine attention.
      • Allow any leakage in the system.
      • Keep any tools or loose items on the compressor.
      • Run the compressor without the belt guard.
      • Use of cleaning agents during changing oil.
      • Repair work while the unit is running.
      • Fill the log sheet for time & parameter.
