REGENERATION OF MIXED BED

  1. OBJECTIVE

To lay down the procedure for regeneration of mixed bed.

  • SCOPE

This SOP is applicable in Water System for regeneration of mixed bed.

  • RESPONSIBILITY
Water system operators/ Engineers : To follow the procedure
  • ACCOUNTABILITY

Head Engineering                                   :    System Compliance

  • PROCEDURE
    • Regenerate the mixed bed, after generation of approx 90 KL water or when the conductance increases from 1.0 µS/cm or pH does not comply the specification i.e 5.0 – 7.0, as per given below procedure.
    • Back Wash:
      • Flow Rate: 1.1 m3/hr.
      • Washing Period : 15 minutes
      • In feed water: RO Water.
      • Close the valves V1 and V2.
      • Open the valves V3, V4 &V12 and switch ON the MB feed pump.
      • Left the system for 10 minutes.
      • During back washing the flow of water should be in upward position.
    • Off the water system and close all the valves.
    • Caustic Injection
    • Requirement : Sodium Hydroxide

Conditions

   Flow Rate: 1.0 m3/hr.

  • Time: 15 minutes.
    • Infeed Water: RO Water
    •  Preparation of Sodium Hydroxide Solution: Prepare sodium hydroxide solution by dissolving 10 kg. Sodium Hydroxide pellets in 34 liters of RO water in a plastic carboy carefully.
    • Open the valves V6, V7 and V2 and switch ON the MB feed pump. When the water flows then open the injector valve V5. This process takes 15 minutes.
    • Caustic Rinse – Conditions:

   Flow Rate: 0.175 m3/hr.

  • Time: 30 minutes.
    • In feed Water: R O Water.
    • After completion of caustic injection close valve V5 and let the valves V7, V6 &V2 open. This process takes 30 minutes. During this process water flows from top to middle.
    • After completion of process close all the valves.
    •       Acid Injection Second Cleaning:
      • Requirement: 33 % Hydrochloric Acid.
      • Conditions:
        • Flow Rate: 0.167 m3/hr.
        • Time: 15 minutes.
        • In feed water: RO Water
      • Preparation of 33 % Hydrochloric Acid: Take 21 liter Conc. Hydrochloric acid and mix in 60 liters RO water carefully in plastic carboy.
      • Open the valves V9 and V10 and switch ON the MB feed pump. When the water flows then open the injector valve V8 & V1. This process takes 15 minutes.
    •       Acid Rinse:
      • Conditions:
        •  Flow Rate: 0.25 m3/hr.
        • Time : 36 minutes
        • In feed Water : R O Water
      • After completion of acid injection close valve V8 and let the valves V9, V10 & V1 open. This process takes 36 minutes. During this process water flows from middle to downwards.
    •  Drain Down:
      • Open the valves V10 and V12. This process takes 5 minutes.
    • Air Mixing:
      • Air pressure: 0.5 kg / cm2
      • Open the valves V11 and air outlet valve V12 and let the resin mixed. This process takes 10 minutes. During this process the air pressure should be maintained.
      • After completion of process close the valve V11.
      • Note: Air should be dried and oil free.
    • Final Rinse:
      • Open the MB inlet valve V01 and rinse valve V10 and let the water flowed through column.
      • Continue this process till the conductance reaches below 1.0 µS/cm & pH 5.0 to 7.0.
    • Release of Purified Water:
      • When the conductance reaches below 1.0 µS/cm and pH between 5.0 & 7.0 then supervisor of water system inform to Quality Control Department to collect the water sample for testing.
      • Q.C. Chemist should sample the water from the mixed bed sampling point and test the sample.
      • After completion of analysis, Q.C. chemist should prepare the report and send to the water system.
      • After release of water collect the purified water in the purified water storage tank.
    • Write the detail in log sheet.
