Standard Operating Procedure for Calibration of Laboratory Glassware

  1. OBJECTIVE:

To lay down a procedure for calibration of laboratory glassware.

  • SCOPE:

This procedure is applicable for procedure for calibration of laboratory glassware.

  • RESPONSIBILITY:

QC Officer/ QC Executive

  • ACCOUNTABILITY:

QC Manager.

  •  PROCEDURE:
    • General Instructions:
      • Rinse the glassware with potable water.
      • Soak the glassware in Teepol / detergent solution /Sulphuric acid.
      • Remove the glassware and clean with proper brushing.
      • Properly rinse the glassware with tap water and then with distilled or purified water.
      • Finally rinse with distilled or purified water.
      • Allow the glassware to drain completely.
      • Dry the glassware in hot air oven with adequate care.
    • Calibration:
      • Remove glassware from the oven and allow cooling to room temperature.
      • In the room where the balance kept, ensure that the temperature must be 27± 2 0C.
      • Arrange a water bath consisting of a plastic beaker containing water at 27 ºC.
      • Place the glass ware to be calibrated on the single pan balance & press the tare switch.
      • Remove the glass ware and transfer the distilled water at 27ºC so that the meniscus of liquid.
      • Weigh the glass ware and note down weight of water up to 4 decimal places similarly transfer water at 25ºC so that weight.
      • Multiple each weight of successive 1 ml graduation with wt. /ml of water at 27ºc i.e.0.99602 g to obtained actual volume in ml.

  • Precaution Take adequate care while handling acids and corrosive chemicals.Ensure thorough cleaning or glassware so that previous residues are totally removed.
  • Glass wares Handle with care.Switch ‘OFF’ the oven during glass ware handling.
