Standard Operating Procedure for Safety & Precautions in handling of chemicals & glassware

  1. OBJECTIVE:

To lay down a procedure for Safety & precautions in handling of chemicals and glassware.

  • SCOPE:

This procedure is applicable for procedure for Safety & precautions in handling of chemicals and glassware.

  • RESPONSIBILITY:

QC Officer/ QC Executive

  • ACCOUNTABILITY:

QC Manager.

  • PROCEDURE:
    • Handling of Chemicals and Glass wares:
      • Read the label before opening the container carefully.
      • Consider the hazards including violent reactions between chemicals and use appropriate protective safety equipment.
      • Use fuming hood for opening of acids, poisonous & toxic chemicals.
      • Do not pipette chemicals by mouth. Use rubber bulbs.
      • Take care while extracting and using hazardous chemicals and use methods that reduce the risk of inhalation, ingestion and contact with skin, eyes and clothing.
      • Avoid using contaminated apparatus and instruments.
      • Close containers tightly after use.
      • Wash hands thoroughly with soap after handling the chemicals.
      • Do not handle toxic and poisonous chemicals if there is a cut or open wound on the skin.
      • Deal with spillage using precautions and method appropriate to the hazards.
      • Use tongs or asbestos gloves to remove all glassware from heat. Hot glass can cause severe burns.
      • Protective gloves, aprons, masks and goggles are worn as safety against chemicals accidents, spillage or splattering.
      • Personnel involved in handling Acids, Poisonous and Toxic Chemicals should put on safety ware (Goggles, Gloves and Masks) as required for materials to be handled.
      • Do not taste chemicals for identification.
      • Do not use damaged glassware for analysis.
      • Never leave vessels unattended when evaporation work is carried out. The vessel may crack or explode as ‘dryness’ condition is approached if the heat source is not adjusted correctly.
    • First aid & Medical attention:
      • In case of minor cuts and ordinary burns use the first aid facility.
      • In case of chemical burns give sufficient water wash to the affected part.
      • Give sufficient eyewash with water in case of splattering of chemicals or solvents in the eyes.
      • If affected by chemicals, seek medical attention immediately and use appropriate first aid till attention is available.
